Annual Profections are an ancient astrological timing technique recovered from the translation of ancient Greek and Latin texts. Most traditional astrologers will use Annual Profections or other Time Lord techniques such as Zodiacal Releasing to accurately predict upcoming influences and important transits in a native's life.
Time Lord translate literally from the Greek word "chronocrator". The Time Lord is the planet which dominates the chart for that year, both natally and regarding transits. For the first 12 months of you life, you are ruled by the planet of your ascendant. Then, the next sign in zodiacal order takes over. So a Gemini rising will be ruled by Mercury for the first year; then Cancer will be activated and the Moon becomes the Time Lord; then Leo becomes activated, and the Sun becomes the Time Lord, and so on.
This divides each year of life into its own chapter, shaped by different planetary themes. One rule of thumb is that whatever the planet promises in the natal chart will be delivered during its year of activation. So a Venus profection year for a well-placed Venus will be a supportive and enjoyable year, whereas for a poorly placed Venus it may be a difficult experience.
We will also use the Time Lord to determine which transits are most significant, and therefore which dates are the most meaningful. In traditional astrology, not all transits are weighted equally, and this is one of the considerations we take into account.
Annual Profections can also be useful if planning a new venture, to see if the action is supported by the planets or not.
